Those People: The Overly Needy

Several Years ago a movie starring Tom Cruise and Renae Zellweger came out called “Jerry Maguire”. Toward the end of the movie we come to that mushy scene where Jerry barges in on Dorthy’s little ‘talk’ group of ladies to tell her one of the most over used lines to win her heart back.

Jerry, all teary eyed, tells her how cynical and competitive his business world is, and then he pauses…and with a trembling lip…quietly ushers out the words…“You complete me.”

Of all the memorable lines…I still hear people say that today!

Now as romantic as that sounds, that is a lot of pressure for any one person to have to live up to on their end of the relationship. Pressure that we were never meant to live under…ever. This is especially difficult for people who seem “overly needy”. You might be thinking of someone right now, or, you might be looking in the mirror…

The real value of any relationship, marriage especially, is to add value to it. Truth is, we all have needs that can be met in only one person…Jesus. I am not suggesting that we do not help each other out. Sometimes your friend needs $ help to get them by…sometimes they need a job and a budget. Sometimes your friend needs to hear an accolade, and be given moral support…sometimes it is o.k. not to answer your phone when they call. Because what we all need is to take time to discover, believe, and receive what God has to say about us.

Remember, we are in this together…we are in this together seeking Jesus to be restored to our God-given potential. And in doing so…we will be able to truly contribute to one another’s lives.

““As for me, I am poor and needy, but the Lord takes thought for me. You are my help and my deliverer; do not delay, O my God!” Psalm 40:17

“And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:19
